On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the city partnership between Berlin and Buenos Aires, the main focus of this year's PHILHARMONIKA Festival 2019 is on Argentina. The present fifth accordion and bandoneon festival organized by PANTONALE e.V. is held under the patronage of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic and the senator for culture and Europe Dr. Klaus Lederer.
The highlight of the PHILHARMONIKA Festival will be the gala concert on Sunday, May 19th, 2019 at 6 pm at the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie. In the context of this event, the Buenos Aires born bandoneon virtuoso Omar Massa will present the characteristics of Argentine music in the framework of a comprehensive program - both as soloist and together with brilliant musicians like Vitaliy Schall, Julius Schwahn and Pavlin Nechev, as well as the Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Symeon Ioannidis.
The program ranges from the classical repertoire, represented by Marcello's „Oboe Concerto in D minor“, over early tango to Astor Piazzolla. Furthermore, the world premiere of Omar Massa's „Concerto for Bandoneon, Piano and String Orchestra“, especially written for this occasion and dedicated to the connection between Buenos Aires and Berlin, will be an absolute highlight.
Celebrated by the media as Astor Piazzolla's successor, Omar Massa plays a pioneering role in the exploitation of the academic repertoire and international concert halls for the instrument bandoneon. This also corresponds to the objective of PANTONALE e.V. who contributes with the accordion and bandoneon festival PHILHARMONIKA for the fifth consecutive time to increasing the publicity of these two instruments.
Moreover, the Berlin audience can look forward to the appearance of the internationally acclaimed Canadian accordionist Jelena Milojević.
In addition to the performances of already internationally established musicians, outstanding young talents will in future also get the chance to show their skills in the interplay with experienced soloists on the stage of the Philharmonie. Therefore, accordion students from several German music colleges will take part in the gala concert on May 19th, 2019. The appearance of two soloists or ensembles under the age of 19, who will be awarded with the participation in the concert at the Philharmonie for their outstanding achievement in the young talent festival „MEISTER VON MORGEN“ (MASTERS OF TOMORROW), also organized by PANTONALE e.V., will be another special program issue.
In the framework of the PHILHARMONIKA Festival there will also take place the concert „Argentinien in Zehlendorf“ (Argentina in Zehlendorf) on April 5th, 2019 at Paulus-Kirche, featuring performances by some of the soloists who will also play at the Philharmonie. Moreover, a Master Class with Omar Massa on May 18th, 2019 at the Argentine Embassy will offer the unique opportunity to be introduced into the particular playing technique of Piazzolla's music by an absolute expert and an authority on this issue.
